We were given a CD with twelve tracks on it, we then choose 3 tracks that we liked the most. These included "Daffodils" by Charlene Soraia, "La Song" by Supergrass and "Recondition" by Autons. We chose these tracks as we believe the have good potential of becoming a effective music video.
Our initial ideas of "Daffodils" is to film a night in a pub/bar with lots of shaky close ups of the lead singer and also her to be lover. We would like to have a glow effect on the whole video with would mirror the folky calm music of the track. We would shot lots of close ups and personal shots of people in the pub. We would film pints emptying and cigarettes going out to convey time passing. Freeze on love interest, really shaky camera to show how the lover makes the girl feel. We would like the begin and end with a sunrise and sunset. We have thought of having the first verse shot in the cemetery down Mill Road, as it is really pretty and we could get lots of lovely shots of the girl walking through. We would like the add lots of pretty effects to add a fairytale effect to the video.
"Auteur" - French for Author. Auteur theory was first created in the 1950's by french cinema critics and directors, for example Francois Truffoult and Andre Breton. Le Cahier du Cinema was their publication that discussed who should or shouldn't be recognised as an auteur - someone whose work has particular characteristics. The characteristics could stylistic (micro), structural, thematic or about process. Tim Burton is a good example of thematic characteristic of isolation. Michel Gondry is a French film, commercial and music video director and an Academy Award-winning screenwriter. He has directed many music videos including The White Stripes - Fell In Love With A Girl, Radiohead - Knives Out, Bjork - Declare Independence and Foo Fighters - Everlong. We found that in most of Michel Gondry's music videos there was an influence of abstract childhood mainly through toys. We believe this Michel Gondry's characteristic. The whole of "Fell in Love With A Girl" is the band performing the song made of lego.
In "Knifes Out" there is a toy train that is seen repeatedly, the main woman in the video is made out of a life size "operation" board game and just her head and neck real.
Bjork's "Declare Independence" has has Bjork controlling a group of men who are connected to each other by wires that Bjork is holding. The way they are dressed and how Bjork is controlling them makes the men look like toy soldiers.
"A Change Would Do You Good" by Sheryl Crow is an extremely colourful. Sheryl is in the video and is seen casting spells on a little world, which shows Michel Gondry's characteristic of childhood coming through. There is a shot at the end where the screen is shown in a semi circle shape and the video spins round as though a part of a board game.
This DVD album cover is simplistic yet extremely effective. The white background accentuates the four coloured photos of each band member. The lead singer, Alex Turner, has the largest photo of the band, signifying his importance in the band. The use of a different colour for each artist portrays the different aspects of the band and the different use/thoughts from each member. There is two smaller black and white photos on the cover which show a crowd and lighting from the concert at the Apollo. Overall we think this cover has a very good use of colour and clearly portrays each member of the band in a separate way.
